Auto glass: How to repair a crack

So you got a crack in your window. If you have a crack in your window thats not from any edge of the glass it can be repaired! You can repair any windshield as long as the crack itself isn't longer than about 6 inches. I myself have repaired cracks in glass under this length myself personally, so I know it can be done. You need specific tools to get the job done however.

Tools needed to repair cracks in glass is a vacuum assisted air pump , a glass drill, a ultraviolet light, special hardening liquid ,some plastic strips, razor blade, and glass cleaner. If you have all the required tools and material you can repair your own cracks yourself.

Repairing your cracks start by drilling a hole in the center of the crack through the first panel of glass. Every windshield is built with two panels of glass and a plastic lam-anent in between the glass. You will know when you are through the first pane of glass when you feel the drill jump down or break through into the plastic membrane.

Clean out the drilled area of the glass with a glass cleaner and now you are ready for the vacuum system. Place the vacuum system on the outside of the windshield hole you just drilled and allow the vacuum to suck all the air out for approximately 15 minutes.

Ok now that you have removed all the air out of the crack you remove the screw plunger in the top of the vacuum and place the liquid gel in unit as required. Now put the pin back in and wait until the clear gel fills the crack so the crack is no longer visible. This process can take up to a hour or more depending on how large the crack and whether or not heat is used.

So now the crack or star shaped ding is filled so you remove the vacuum and place the plastic strip over top the hole you drilled with the excess of gel dribbling out the crack. Now place your ultraviolet lamp over top of the repair area and wait about 15 minutes for it to harden.

This can cost anywhere from 40-60 dollars to do professionally and the kit costs over 300. I however recommend just replacing the entire glass.
