Well time to get the crystal ball and the wart out again, seems like all we ever do in these sport fields is predictions.
Have a clue or some special inside info on how this draft should turn out this year? Well brother( or sister), you don't know jack. Seriously, what did you get, some tidbit from ESPN, SportingNews, or some mock draft guru? Yeah, so did I, however I do not feel any closer to the true outcome of this weekend's draft. There are so many head games being played between teams right now, talks of trading up or down for the right guy, taking a guy because the team can try and trade him, taking the best available guy or the one best suited for a particular team. Oh yeah, this predicting business is a piece of cake.
For those of you who are not so hard pressed on jumping on those whose predictions may not come true, i.e. me, here is a little compare and contrast I like to do before each draft to get a good idea who teams are giving a strong look at.
Ok first and foremost, forget trying to work with draft day trades, its impossible. We, unless one of you out there is a NFL General Manager, have nary a clue as to what is being offered and what teams are offering, so throw that right out. Take the top draft order and look at a consensus of the top rated athletes out there available. For a team with the top pick to overlook the best player regardless of position is often unheard of, although obviously last year's draft is on everyone's mind. Oakland Raiders, with the top pick, probably need the top player at each position, and although WR Calvin Johnson may be the most gifted potential draftee, QB JaMarcus Russell will be the top pick. Oakland can not lure a better QB prospect by dangling that No. 1 pick to the rest of the league, so he's there best bet to build around. Detroit Lions at the No. 2 spot will take Brady Quinn, QB out of Notre Dame. Again, the Lions really don't have much in the way of leverage with the rest of the league, besides Quinn would fit nicely in the Mike Martz offensive system that Detroit has. Now is where it gets hairy.
The Cleveland Browns hold the third pick, and as with most of the teams in the top ten draft order, they can use help anywhere. This is a pick that could get traded because if Cleveland can't get one of the top two QB's, they could easily let themselves fall into the later numbers in an order to gain either an established veteran or they can stockpile draft picks to use as they please. Assuming there is no trade,
