Dealing with Problem People

Causes of prejudice and bullying (and what you can do about them)

Prejudice can come from stereotypes, media, the environment you've grown up in, the beliefs of your family and friends, ignorance, and/or fear. Bullying can come from peer-pressure, ignorance, fear, insecurity, an expression of other frustrations, or a need for attention.

Anyone experiencing prejudice and bullying should understand that the problem is with the other person and not themselves. Don't get worked up about it and have an emotional response to it, because the problem isn't with you. Easier said than done perhaps, but anger, hate, and fear only feed on itself and the last thing you probably want to do is mirror the prejudice and bullying back and become what you hate.

If someone is being prejudice, you could explain to the person and make them aware of their actions and how ignorant their view is. Hopefully it will make them think about things and try to put themselves in the other person's shoes. We all have prejudice, but some have a more open mind to consciously overcome it. Are green Smarties any better or worse than the blue ones?

If someone is bullying you and you do not feel there's any way of making them stop their actions either by telling them yourself or getting in a third-party, then it's best to have nothing to do with them. There are a lot of reasons someone could be a bully, and none of them are related to anyone but the bully. Perhaps the person bullying you doesn't understand their actions as that's how they've grown up? It's no excuse, but it can help you understand that there is sometimes more to the issue than them just being mean.

Sometimes you've got to mix with a better quality of people and not let the turkeys get you down.
