Empowered Volume 1: The review
By StorytellerNYC
Empowered
Written and drawn by Adam Warren
Published by Dark Horse Books
$14.95
If your into parodies superhero comic, damsels in distress, Japanese manga, and all things pop culture, then Adam Warren's Empowered is right up your alley. Done in digest format, and written and drawn by the first pioneering force of american-based manga for over two decades. Drawn in black and white using Adam's own pencil work(no inks folks), tells the story of a young girl with a costume that's so unflattering to her own body image issues that if tears apart at the most uncomfortable situations. Not to mention having a best friend, who was once someone she went to school with, a boyfriend who was a minion for the bad guys, and a talking belt with a coach potato attitude, and even her teammates tend to doubt her at even waiting moment. Empowered is told in short stories of 12-15 pages per story, enough to character development and getting us the reader more into the characters. I have to warn you in advance that it contains some violence and mature material but it's not at all porno. Adam's work is some of the best I have seen in a while to be honest. I urge you all to pick this book up if you want something new, original and something fun to read, give it a look.
