Qualities to look for in a neighborhood

When searching for a new home it's a good idea to take as much care researching a new neighborhood, as it is looking at a prospective house. After all, it would be dreadful to move into your dream home, having spent a lot of time and effort to do so, only to find your new neighborhood is a bad place to be.

One of the first things to do is to look at the condition of the houses, gardens and streets surrounding the property for sale.. If these are in good condition, and are also being kept neat and tidy, chances are that the local people care about their environment and will be good neighbors.

If however, rubbish bins are overflowing, there is dog mess on the pavements, and rubbish blowing around peoples yards, you will know there is little caring and respect going on in the area.

It is possible to find out much about a neighborhood by simply turning up in your car and sitting and observing for a while, preferably at several different times of day. It's particularly a good idea to check out how the neighborhood operates after nightfall. A noisy and disruptive place can be unpleasant to live in. So if peace and silence is important to you night-time is a good time to observe.

A good neighborhood contains people who work together as a team. They know who each other are, and look out for one another. If a neighbor is sick they are helped out with what ever needs to be done by the other neighbors. If someone is sad or bereaved they are offered sympathy and caring.

Many neighborhoods operate a neighborhood watch scheme where they help to cut down on crime and other problems. Some criminals are put off of committing crimes in certain places, just by seeing the neighborhood watch stickers in the house windows.

A useful quality in a neighborhood is one that incorporates special neighborhood events locals can get involved in. It can be very useful if the community has banded together and provided facilities that are needed in that particular area. Evening classes can be great if held near by and you want to learn something new. A safe creche for babysitting, manned by trusted individuals can be invaluable.

It can also be very useful to have local shops for those last minute items, and if they are within walking distance and there are no busy roads its even better.

Basically, if you want to be a good neighbor you deserve to live in a good neighborhood, so make sure you get what you deserve.
