Why Bush should be impeached: Adding up the costs in Iraq

If the American people, and the world, have to wait 15 odd months for him to leave office, I rather hibernate and wake up when he's gone. To have to face and witness a situation where he is still the Leader of the Free World, is painful to any human being who has a basic understanding of human rights, of sovereignty, of history. Iraq's "Mission Unaccomplished" was a mission that should not even have begun.

Usually in any project or scenario, a cost-benefit structure can be used as a criteria to judge its results. In this case, this structure is irrelevant as the benefits are almost negligible. People talk about the hundreds of soldiers killed in the war. Almost 700,000 Iraqi civilian lives have been destroyed by this debacle.

Estimating the costs for Iraq's future is something beyond attempt. The irreconciliable split in Sunni-Shiite relations. The sectarian violence. The political turmoil. Yes, Saddam Hussein was persecuting the Shia minority. Yes, there were human rights violations. Looking at it now, Saddam's era probably seems like the Golden Age compared to what the Iraqis are encountering now. Things will not improve for them for a long time. So the troops can be pulled out. But the invasion opened up a can of worms which will be spilling over long after they leave.

So much for democracy.
