Toddlers are very curious sponges who need frequent stimulation throughout their day. One of the best forms of stimulation is play. It allows them the chance to explore, imagine, and wonder at the world around them. Spread a blanket out on the floor, and watch how independently your toddler will play for hours at end.
Play teaches toddlers interaction, independence, and increases language skills. As toddlers run and jump around using everyday objects amusing themselves without their parent's consent, they're allowed the freedom of expression.
As toddlers grow, play contributes to the development of their cognitive, physical, social and emotional skills, which is very crucial to their overall growth. Often during play toddlers venture out fiercely with little concept of safety, and only after a few mishaps do they begin to understand the idea of boundaries. Each opportunity of play teaches toddlers many necessary skills that will be very advantageous later on.
According to a study in the Academy of Pediatrics, play is important to healthy brain development. As toddlers master their world from play, they begin to develop new competencies, and resiliency to face future challenges. All of this comes about through opportunities children are given to play. However, parents and caregivers need to understand not only the importance of play, but also how to let the toddler play.
Experts have stated, "undirected play allows children to learn how to work in groups, to share, to negotiate, to resolve conflicts, and to learn self-advocacy skills." Toddlers need opportunities to participate in child-driven play where they can learn "decision making skills and discover their own areas of interest". Granted parents control most play, however when parents let go just a little that toddler can begin to express more leadership. Parent's participation governs the rules, and naturally the toddler just adapts to the rules set by their parents. But it's encouraging for toddlers to play, fall, and learn on their own sometimes. It is truly necessary for them in the long run.
