No one likes to end a friendship but unfortunately some friends aren't meant to last a lifetime. When the cost of keeping your friendship outweighs the benefits, it may be time to say goodbye.
To help yourself through this tough decision you should ask yourself some important questions.
#1. Are you giving more than you are receiving?
Some friends call only when they need something from you but when you are in a bind they are nowhere to be found.
#2. Do you feel depressed after seeing your friend?
Some people are chronically needy and impose their negativity on you. This can leave you feeling emotionally drained and unhappy.
#3. Have you changed?
Over time people grow and change. Their interests, likes and dislikes may take a different direction and they find they no longer have a lot in common with their friend.
#4. Is your friend behaving in a way that you find offensive?
Behaviors such as flirting, put downs, sarcasm and failing to be supportive can put a damper on any relationship. No one should continue a friendship that is painful and unhealthy.
So how do you end it?
You could try the direct approach- face to face. Let the person know that you no longer feel that you have a lot in common and the relationship is no longer working for you. Tell them how sad that makes you feel and how much it meant to you to have them in your life. If you are uncomfortable facing your friend you could try writing a letter explaining why you need to end the friendship.
Keep in mind that friends come into our lives for a reason. Some are meant to last while others drift away. There are always lessons to be learned and sometimes a friend may enter your life only to help you through something. So when it's time to say goodbye remember to do so with grace and dignity.
