Newlyweds: A guide to combining closets

When you're trying to start your life with your new spouse, sharing closet space seems so trivial that most people give it no thought. However, when your new roomie starts to get on your nerves - and trust me, he (or she) will - the "trivial" closet will inevitably be the straw that breaks the newlywed's back. If you take a little bit of time to organize it to both parties' liking, then you can get on with the rest of your new life.

The best way to share closet space is in fact to not share it. Of course this requires a spare bedroom, but if that is something you happen to have, then this is the time to put it to use. Find somewhere else for the Christmas decorations you had been keeping there, and let your new spouse keep their things in that room. This way you can each stretch out in your own space.

If, like many newlyweds, you are forced to cozy up in less spacious surroundings, then the key is structure. For the actual closet, try to separate the rack in two with a closet spacer. Without a solid division, the clothes can get pushed to one end or the other, leaving one partner holding the short end of the stick.

For the rest of the bedroom, as well as the bathroom, make sure that you create enough new storage space that it doesn't feel like you have to squeeze in. Fit two chests of drawers into your bedroom, put up shelves, add cupboard organizers to the space under the sink.

Basically, a good walk around Ikea should do the trick!
