If you are a brunette and you want to go blonde, without the result looking orange or brassy, it is best to plan your hair regime wisely. I say this because it took me a while before realizing there is a solution to this problem. In fact, when I get my hair colored a lighter shade or blonde, I go to a salon because it's just generally easier, however; it tends to get a little pricey. The girl/stylist that did my hair recently introduced me to some great tips.
It is extremely important to find the right shade for you. Cool shades go best with rosey skin tones, whereas; warm shades go best with warmer skin tones. Neutral works best on both, but use with caution. After you find the right shade, you want to purchase a lightening toner. You can find this at specialty stores such as Sally's Beauty Supply. You don't need to have a license to buy this. It may be a little more, but it will be worth it.
After you have chosen the right shade, you definitely want to apply it regularly. Leave it on for the time it says on the box. After you continue, you want to rinse regularly. Then you want to apply the toner. Leave the toner on until you can see your hair looking blonde, without a hint of orange or brassiness. The key is leaving it on until you see a dramatic change, but not leaving it on too long because it will dry out the hair. Once it is at the right effect, you want to rinse your hair totally and wash and condition it.
To maintain the hair color, purchase shampoos and conditioners that are for "blonde hair" and for "blonde hair color", ETC. Not just generic kinds that say "for color treated hair" or regular.
Good Luck!
