When most people think of working for a non-profit, they believe that they must settle for a lower salary in order to work on an issue that is important to them. However, this is simply not true. In fact, non-profit salaries are extremely competitive with the private industry because these businesses want and need the best and brightest to ensure their company exceeds.
As a new employee to the non-profit sector, I was surprised at what the company was able to pay in salaries. I make more do something I love for this non-profit than I would doing the same thing in the private industry. Plus, the benefits and other perks could not be beat. Some people may say the money should be going more toward the cause, however the non-profit could not continue unless employees had salaries and benefits that kept them with their company.
Long gone are the days where people have a feeling of loyalty to their company. Many workers will leave at the drop of a hat for a few pennies more per month. However, by ensuring that the salary and benefit package not only compete, but beat many private companies, non-profits ensure that they will hold onto their great employees and continue to fulfill their missions.
