Children reach many critical periods during childhood. It is during this time that brain activity is at its highest. Without stimulating this activity, the brain will permanently discard parts that are not used. For thousands of years, parents around the world have unknowingly increased their child's intelligence with an unlikely tool: toys. The challenge for parents, however, is based on what toys have the greatest influence on early childhood development.
You might be walking down the toy aisle of your favorite store and find yourself in a sticky situation "Should I buy this fuzzy red doll that giggles when I touch it or the same fuzzy red doll that teaches my child how to poop?"
One of the first things that children learn is object permanence. Object permanence the knowledge that objects do not disappear when they are out sight. Playing peek-a-boo is a great way to test a child's object permanence. Have you ever seen the toys with five trap doors that unleash various sesame street characters when a button is pressed? Very young children could play with this toy for hours before they realize that the figurines do not disappear when the door is closed.
There are countless other toys that can affect a child's early development. One of the most popular and effective toys are the electronic ones. The rise of electronic technology has been creating a completely different species of toys for almost thirty years. Many interactive games get the child involved in virtual adventures and learning languages with their favorite cartoon characters. Leap Frog is an ever-growing toy company that manufactures electronic books, drums, and other hands-on equipment that prepares a child for school.
All humans are born with unique personalities and intelligences. It is important to understand your child's personality when selecting his or her toys. For example, a child with good spatial skills learns best when building blocks and drawing. They also enjoy computer games that let them construct their own creations. It is important to stimulate their spatial ability because it is easier for them to learn that way.
Other children enjoy recreational activities. They learn most easily through observation and trying things on their own. They enjoy games, sports, swimming, and toys that require coordination skills. Children with musical abilities need to be stimulated by toys that can expand the child's musical ability. Electronic keyboards, guitars, xylophones, video games, and music software are all toys that can help musical children expand their abilities.
Regardless of any ability, some people will tell you that almost every toy you buy will have some sort of educational effect on your child. The most important thing to remember is that children need to stimulate their minds. Without that stimulation, their brains could choose to ignore something that they need later in life. While toys play a key role in education development, sometimes a good imagination the only toy a child really needs.
