Parents naturally worry when their teenager passes their driving test and can legally drive without supervision. Teenagers have a tendency to think they know everything and this can be dangerous where cars are involved. This article will give a few tips on how to ensure that your teen drives safely which will not only protect them but also give you peace of mind.
The first tip involves the period before the teenager gets their license and even before they start driving: always drive safely yourself, particularly when they are in the car with you. If you set a good example yourself, for example obeying speed limits, they will learn from you and will be more likely to drive safely themselves.
The second tip also involves the period before the teenager gets their license as well as afterwards: it is very important to emphasize that practice makes perfect and that even though they may have a license they still have a lot to learn. Teenagers will probably feel that this is nagging etc. but even if they brush it off when you remind them they will be taking the advice in subconsciously. It may help to let them know that you, too, had a lot to learn after getting your license.
The third tip is to set a time period after getting their license in which they are not allowed to drive friends, (for example, 6 months). Set the time period in advance and stick to it. One of the main causes of accidents is being distracted and new drivers are far more likely to get distracted by talking passengers than more experienced ones. Younger drivers are also more likely to show off.
So to summarize: teach your teenager that cars can be dangerous and should be driven safely, using yourself as an example; tell them that passing the test is not the end of their learning; set a time period during which they are not allowed to drive friends.
