Asking for an increase in compensation can often be overwhelming for some individuals. Most people in business are well aware of a plethora of horror stories involving diligent and devoted employees who are denied an increase in pay by their employers. Fortunately, however, asking for a raise does not always have to be stressful and tense. In fact, if you adequately prepare before making a request for a raise, you'll find that discussions between you and your employer are often much smoother and much more effective. Keep the following suggestions in mind if you are considering asking for a raise.
Gather the facts together. Talk to your peers to get a feel for the waters. If there are any objections coming your way, you're likely to get a feel for them by talking to people and hearing out what they have to say about you.
Get yourself organized. Be sure that you have any documentation or relevant materials that will prove your contributions to the organization. If you have time sheets that record the numerous hours of overtime you have incurred, don't be afraid to bring these to the attention of your boss. Sometimes, employers are simply lacking the evidence that demonstrates your ability because management is typically somewhat removed from the day-to-day office occurrences.
Be realistic. Are you really management material? Or, could you use some more skills training? Whatever the case may be, take your boss' standpoint and be realistic about whether or not you are as qualified as you say you are. If you aren't qualified, or for some reason do not deserve the position, the likely hood is, there will be objections on the part of your hirer that will let you know.
Overall, getting a raise is very much like playing a chess game with your employer. Anticipate his or her objections accurately, and chances are you're likely to have the upper hand in negotiations when it comes to compensation.
