Financing an energy efficient home

There are many different ways in which the building and maintenance of energy efficient homes. In this day and age of rising energy costs finding ways to reimburse yourself are vital. Luckily for you there are numerous methods of saving money or getting refunded for the consumer who is interested in an energy efficient home. There are dozens of techniques to do this but a few stand out. They include the following:

The most direct way to finance an energy efficient home is to apply for government assistance. Since the government also wants us to have the most energy efficient homes possible they offer refunds and discounts on such models. They also can offer rebates for people looking to make their homes more energy efficient. You should check your state energy office to find out what programs they have in place for local residents. Barring that they will be able to refer you to more general federal programs.

Another key to getting these credits is to keep track of your house's Home Energy Rating (HER). This usually involves having your home inspected by a professional energy rater and then given a numerical value that represents how energy efficient your home is. This increases the value in the eyes of many and in general makes your house more attractive to lenders.

The professional is sent over to the house to inspect it thoroughly and gage things like air leakage, window efficiency, heating and colling levels and insulation. They then write a detailed report that determines whether or not you are qualified for government assistance. This report will make or break you so it is important to meet the criteria listed above.

I think it is also important to realize that energy efficient homes pay for themselves over time. They money saved on things like heating and electricity will in the end add up to far more than was spent. Following the above advice will result in saving even more money along the way than you would have otherwise. Either way it is worth it.
