The Egyptian religion, pantheon of gods and goddesses, and their incredible pyramids and other buildings have fascinated humankind for thousands of years. "The Egyptian Book of the Dead" suggests esoteric practices participated in by priests, priestesses, and royalty.
Before there was a New Age, esoteric groups and secret societies studied Egyptian religion and theology. This includes current organizations such as the Masons and Rosicrucians, Golden Dawn and others. Many of these organizations are primarily founded on Egyptian theology and esoteric practices.
As for New Age interest, it is very much the same. There is a fascination with the pyramids, how they were made, what they were really used for, and how long ago they were built. There is great interest in the ceremonies practiced in the pyramids and temples, ceremonies for healing and for transformation. It is interesting that the baby Jesus and his family escaped to Egypt when his life was threatened.
Edgar Cayce suggested that both Jesus and John the Baptist went to Egypt to go through initiation at Cheops. Many think that the tomb is empty in Cheops because it was never meant to be a tomb. It was a ceremonial center for spiritual transformation. Some believe that the initiate spent three days and three nights in the sarcophagus, with the lid closed. In that time, you would face all of your personal demons. If the experience doesn't drive you crazy, you will be transformed. A friend of mine spent the night in the great pyramid as part of a tour. I believe she slept in the tomb. She said the place stank and it was very difficult to get any sleep.
Cayce also said that there is a Hall of Records hidden somewhere extending out from the Sphinx's paws. It will contain records of Atlantis and other ancient wisdom.
