Students deserve the very best in opportunities. However, these opportunities can be cut short by teachers that have biased approach to teaching. Every student should be treated as an individual without regards to stereotypes or other predetermined biases. The problem is that most teachers don't even know they are picking favorites or denouncing others as pests.
Teaching is a hard profession and it can be argued that teaching high school is the absolute hardest teaching job available. Many teens are just starting to descover thereselves and pushing boundries to the max. A teacher with a few classes during the day can lose track of the student as an individual and this is where the biasedness comes into play. Teachers in general are good to students and are in the profession to teach. The last thing any teacher wants is to labeled as biased.
Unfortunately teachers can become biased as the school semester drags along. Certain students became hard to deal with while others are accepting of the challenge and excited to be in school. Being a part-time night instructor I can attest to the biasness of teaching. You don't want to be biased but then again you want someone to get excited about what you are teaching. You want class participation, you want enthusiasm.
Teachers have a hard job and they are frequently underpaid then they are asked to deal with all sorts of problems while they are trying hard to treat the other 20 kids equally. In the end the teacher must be hard on themselves and cognizant of their effect on students from their biasness.
Students can become more alienated from the class if they feel the teacher is shunning them. Conversely the favored student can grow with this newfound attention. That may seem like a good thing but lets not forget there are many other kids in class, each of them deserving of the attention and time of the teacher. Biased teachers can have a huge impact on the development of a student through high school even affecting his future education goals.
Biased teachers can have the unpleasant effect of deterring a young mind from attending college. If a student sees that the school system is failing them then they are more than likely to shy away from furthering their education. Teachers have a profound lasting effect on students lives. High school students are at a critical time in their lives where effective teachers can guide young minds through difficult times. A bias no matter how small can undermine this effect.
