Math has always gotten a bad rap. Hailed as the most difficult and most dreaded of all academic subjects, it has earned its stereotype as a favorite pastime of geeks and nerds. That stereotype extends to the high school math club, but the assumption about who should belong to this club has been wrong.
The purpose of most high school math clubs is to foster an appreciation for the subject through:
* math fairs and competitions,
* the observance of historical achievements in the subject area,
* recognition of students who excel in math,
* tutoring for students who struggle with math or need skills building for standardized tests
* fellowship among those who have a fondness for the subject.
The range of opportunities provided by a high school math club are not exclusive to "nerds." Because math is a core requirement for both secondary schools and colleges, it is essential to create safe havens for students and school communities to hone computation and reasoning skills.
It should not necessarily be labeled the "geeky" thing to do well in math, and if we choose such labeling, then we all, to some extent, have an inner geek.
