Essays: Desperation

that people make, usually under the hypnotic spell of a system of group belief: this is the influence of the "rotten conditioning" of which Krishnamurti spoke. Those of us who choose to accept our place within the hellish realm of repression, in which our natural gifts of awareness and compassion are buried under the slanderous mud of Power, must live with the consequences of that acceptance until such time as we are driven-usually by failure, loss, and inner collapse-to look within ourselves and find the truth that has been so long and cruelly censored.

Gandhi, and all the famous and anonymous people like him, unburdened themselves of the iron baggage of that repression, and thus stepped enduringly clear of the cage of belief. In Gandhi's case, as in many others, he was helped to change the world. This is why I recommend that peopleespecially childrenlearn about the lives of people like Gandhi, Socrates, and Bruno. Not for what they did, but for who they were. These people are still alive in the field of universal consciousness today because they made the crucial inner decisions that led them to a life without fear. If there can be any greater success in human living, then I would like to hear about it.

This is, indeed, the goal of every therapy and approach to self-development that is worth the name: a life without fear. No human therapist, school of psychology, or theory of the personality can deliver it alone: such a transformation can only come from the influence of an energy that crosses the dimensions of time and space, the limitations of thought, and the inner walls of Power. Some call it Atman, some Tao, some Spirit; most call it God. I call it Love. It is there for us all, when we call out to it in sincerity and modesty. It is the living gateway to the complete and regenerative experience of Lovethe transformative energy of the universe that can fill every corner of our lives, every space of our being, whenever we allow it room to grow.
