I had to help my 10 year old with a science project last night. It was actually pretty fun and is a good chance to spend quality time. It was very simple and good to do not just for a project but also on a rainy do or just to do something together. Here are the instruction.
Materials needed:(To make play dough)
6 cups of flower
2 cups of salt
4 tbls of cooking oil
2 cups of water and a large bowl
plastic bottle (such as a soda bottle)
A box with edges or a square baking pan
baking soda and vinegar(for lava) do not mix in bowl
food coloring (for dough and lava)

Instructions:
-Mix all the ingredients in the bowl until the dough is smooth and firm.
add more water if needed. add food coloring to desired color.
-Stand the empty bottle in the middle of the pan and mold the play dough around the bottle making the slopes of the volcanoe up to the mouth of the bottle.
-fill the bottle most of the way with warm water mix with a little red food coloring.
-add about 4-5 tablespoons of baking soda to the bottle
-now add vinegar to the bottle .
