Album reviews: Security, by Antibalas

Security, the new album sporting seven tracks, is by the not well-enough known band Antibalas. In order to review this album, we have to get to know the band, at least a little bit!

First off, Antibalas is Spanish for 'bulletproof' which is a surprisingly apt description for them. This band is well known on the independent music scene as one of the hardest working bands around. The band now consists of more or less twelve incredibly talented musicians who are anchored by Martin Perna. Perna formed the band in 1998, getting seven people together to play in a pub. The band's original sound was basically based on afrobeat, but they have since moved on to even more innovative rhythms. A truly independent band, they avoid commercial events and venues like the plague, opting instead to stick to constant live performances in pubs, bars, benefits and block parties.

Now, Antibalas continues to stick to its roots that are found in afrobeat, which is a combo of jazz and Nigerian traditional tunes. Not a jamming band, their live performances are pre-composed and are conducted on stage by their saxophonist, Mr. Stuart Bogie. A woman by the name of Amaya does their vocals.

Now, onto Security, their ninth album. Fast, alternating rhythms provided by drums and synthesizers characterize the first song: Beaten Metal, as well as the second, Filibuster X. Sanctuary, the third track, moves into something more sublime, as suggested by its title. All of these songs, as well as the other six, are truly innovative, providing both a danceable rhythm and unique sounds of wind instruments, unusual percussion and synthesized music. These instruments are unvaryingly combined into a well blended harmony that is undercut in an, at times, head-bobbing rhythm.

In brief, the album Security offers more of the same. If you are familiar with Antibalas and enjoy their work, you will be pleased to know that they have stuck to the formula of their previous albums. Personally, I think the album is okay, but I would surely enjoy it more at one of their dynamic live performance. That is where I believe Antibalas is truly 'bulletproof'.
