In high school, everyone wants to be cool and to be known by their peers for doing something amazing. Football, now that was a cool thing to do. If you played any sport, you were almost automatically adored by all of your classmates. What about the people that didn't want to play sports? That's where math club came in.
I was pretty popular all throughout high school. I had dates to every dance and it seemed as though everyone in school was my friend. I even came in second place for prom queen, but not because I was one of the cool kids. It was more because I marched to the beat of a different drum. People liked me because I wasn't afraid to do my own thing. I loved to learn and was always willing to work hard for what I wanted.
I joined math club in my junior year and had a great time. We would go to other schools to take tests to see which school did better. I guess it's kind of like playing away games on a sports team. I met a lot of really nice and helpful people when we competed. We also got to go out to eat each year. I definitely looked forward to going to a fancy restaurant for free. How can you say no to benefits like that? Not to mention the boost it gives your math grades because you are taught things that you wouldn't learn until college.
I learned from my two years in math club that you don't have to pretend to be someone you are not to fit in. I know I am smart; and I know that some look at me as being a geek. However, those are some of the reasons I feel good about myself. I am proud to say that I was a member of my high school math club.
