When faced with a male or female boss the goal is the same, to land a sizable raise virtually unscathed. For women this requires some maneuvering since the double standard of pay is in full effect.
The negotiating process should begin with self confidence. Walk into the office with assertiveness. Have a clear understanding of who you are, what you want and that you are good at what you do. Remember you add value to the organization.
Be professional in your request, demeanor and tone. Avoid provocative dress and body language. Monitor fluctuations in speech and keep focused on the task at hand. Clearly state your objective in the meeting and be prepared to substantiated the request.
Note your individual accomplishments, highlight your team results, learned skills and strengths. Don't assume that your boss keeps score. Further anticipate opposition and be prepared to disavow the possible objections without becoming aggressive. Finally refrain from emotional outburst. Maintain professionalism at all times.
