Global warming: How to reduce your impact on the road

Large corporations and companies are not the only contributors to global warming, we all do and we all need to start making changes to protect our environment. There are several places to start including the home, at work and on the road and if everyone was to make one or two changes it would dramatically reduce our carbon emissions. Our vehicles are one of the largest arenas for change that we have available which would greatly reduce emissions and positively impact the environment and global warming.

Switching your car or SUV for a hybrid or more fuel efficient vehicle would be the most significant change, drastically reducing carbon emissions. Walking, biking, carpooling or taking public transportation rather than driving your gas guzzling vehicle also makes a large reduction in emissions. Unfortunately, these options may not be available for everyone, but there are other changes that can be made regarding the maintenance and operation of your vehicle that can have an impact, albeit a smaller one, including the following:

Ensure your vehicle is serviced regularly
Use the correct oil and change the air filter often
Keep your tires correctly inflated
Do not idle your vehicle
Bundle errands together, making only one trip
Reduce your speed and drive evenly as accelerating and braking hard
Monitor air conditioning and heating, keeping windows closed when in use
Remove any extra weight in the vehicle

If unable to change your vehicle or reduce its usage, offset your carbon dioxide emissions by making these and other changes in your home or office. Even buying local produce and other items can reduce transportation emissions for the goods and services you use, further reducing the on the road' impact on our environment. Plant a tree. Switch to energy efficient florescent light bulbs. Inform others of changes they can make. There are multiple choices for change that will beneficially impact the environment to offset vehicle usage should you be unable to switch your vehicle or have an alternate method of commuting, with many changes saving both financially and environmentally. So go green and make some changes today.
