Expecting to see a posed picture of Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt or any other A-list celebrity, I was mildly surprised when instead of Hollywood's "It" couple, I was delivered a Grey's Anatomy star, whose name I don't even know. Underneath her picture was a blurb about some sort of album she's working on and how much the people at www.perezhilton.com are not looking forward to its release. Intrigued, I continued to scroll down, reading each blurb about each celebrity.
The website basically, is a simple, pasted together pink version of any tabloid you can find at the supermarket for a couple of bucks. The only differences between Life & Style and www.perezhilton.com, are the lack of any editorial control and the abundance of unsolicited opinions from the author, Perez Hilton himself.
On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best celebrity reporting money can buy, I would give this site a 1.5. With regards to web design, Perez is obviously lacking. From the flamingo pink background to the over-abundance of site advertising to the simplistic layout, I could have done better using a free site from Office Live.
On celebrity reporting, I can't really classify any of the text on this site as "reporting." Its more like a personal blog of someone who has nothing better to do than play with PhotoShop and write sarcastic comments about people he's probably never even met. Even with thorough investigating, I still was unable to find one complete paragraph about any one person.
So, why does this site get a 1.5 as opposed to a negative score? Well, Perez Hilton does seem to be on top of things. He had a picture of Boris Yeltsin posted within minutes of MSN on the same day as his death. So, apparently Perez is well-connected, but any amount imagination and skillful writing are nowhere to be found on this site.
BOTTOM LINE: If you really want some celebrity info, spring for People Magazine or Life & Style. If you are looking for garish portraits and opinionated rantings, www.perezhilton.com is the place to be.
