Personally, I don't think that asking for a raise is any different for women. It's possible that women may be concerned that they won't be as successful in negotiating because men tend to make more money even if they have the same skill set, but that shouldn't stop any women from trying to get a raise. In fact, I would find it hard to believe that women are not as successful in asking for raises, since the standards are the same.
However, if you are a woman negotiating for a raise here is some general advice.
Dress professionally. Although it may be tempting to use sex appeal to your advantage, it won't get you taken very seriously. Your boss is not likely to provide you a raise simply through flirtation and showing a little skin (unless you work at a job where a revealing look is important).
Be neutral. Do not think that playing up your boss's emotions will get you a raise. Do not cry or act desperate, especially if you work in a professional environment. This will play on your boss's guilt, and may even lead to your dismissal for trying to manipulate a raise from him/her.
When asking for a raise, be simple and up front. Do not go into any lengthy stories of why you need the raise. Instead, focus on the qualities that make you a good worker, which will show why you deserve a raise. Make a list of positives you can account for and discuss these with your boss to prove your worth.
