Understanding the Pythagorean theorem

Pythagorean theorem is a simple formula just like Einstein's formula.The Pythagorean theorem,formulated by well known ancient Mathematician Pythagoras,states that in case of a right triangle,the sum of the square of hypotenuse is equal to sum of the squares of other two sides.

In a practical way,if a rope is needed to support a tree of 4 m length( b^2)
,the rope must be tied to a piece of wood 3m away form the base of the tree(a^2).The tree is perpendicular to the ground.The rope tied becomes the hypotenuse.
As per the Pythagorean theorem,

c^2 = a^2 + b^2
To find the length of the rope:
3^2 + 4^2 = 25.

The square root of 25 is 5.So the rope must be of 5m in length.

The pythagorean theorem can be used to find distances at which the ship has to be anchored and used for many other practical applications in geometry.

More examples:
1.If the length 2 sides of a triangle is 7cm and 8cm,then the length of the other side of a right triangle will be:
8^2=7^2+x
x=8^2-7^2
=64-49=15
=3.8729
