How to get out of a fashion rut

by Heather Russell

Created on: April 23, 2007

There are two kinds of fashion ruts; the kind where you simply feel a little boring or out-of-date, and the kind where you've been wearing the same high-waisted, acid-washed jeans since the Reagan administration. While both can be equally frustrating (albeit in different ways), don't despair; there are some very doable (and often very fun!) ways to get out of your fashion rut.

If you are a member of the second kind of fashion rut, you've got the most difficult and most exciting path ahead of you. If you're a member of the first, skip to step three!

First: Throw it out!
The best way to force yourself to update your wardrobe is to give yourself no other option. We all have several articles of clothing that need to be thrown out (or given away to a secondhand store or local charity). Take a minute to think about your wardrobe. You know that article of clothing that you've kept for years even though you know it's unflattering? The one that you end up wearing because you have nothing else, but then feel mildly embarrassed about? Get rid of it! While you're at it, get rid of anything you've had for more than a few years. Exceptions to this include super-comfy around-the-house wear that you're keeping for sentimental reasons. But even in this category, investing in a cute pair of straight-leg sweatpants without elastic at the ankles will give you a confidence boost, even if you're just wearing them to pick up the mail.

Second: Easy upgrades.
Now that you've thrown some things away, you can more easily assess the holes in your wardrobe. The best way to update is always to start with new basics, as this is where most women tend to hold on to the old favorites. The best way to feel comfortable, yet fashionable, is to avoid extremes. Choose pants in a boot-cut or trouser leg, in basic colors for work, and jeans in similar cuts and a darker wash for the weekend. Pieces with a little stretch are more comfortable and keep your look polished. Don't be frustrated if it takes some time to find pieces you're comfortable with; changing your look can be intimidating! Enlist the help of salespeople in the stores, and bring along a fashion-conscious friend to help. Most importantly, don't be married to a size. If you need to try a size larger or smaller than you usually wear, go with it. Sizes are inconsistent between stores, and a great fit is worth it!

Third: Spice it up!
This is where you can have some fun. Once you've upgraded your basics, you have a foundation on which to base your
