Ways to communicate with a know-it-all

How should you communicate with know it all? The first thought in most of our heads is usually something along the lines of "Do I have to?" Well, sometimes the answer is yes, particularly if this person is someone you work with or a member of your own family. So, how to do it without frustrating yourself or getting pulled into a confrontation.

For starters, have realistic expectations. Even if they are in the wrong or don't know what they're talking about, it is highly unlikely they will admit that. Your goal should not be to force them into submission. Simply to address your point, and move on.

Do not lose your cool. You will never accomplish anything if you allow yourself to lose your temper. Maintaining your composure is essential.

Be rational. Even the most stubborn know it all can sometimes be persuaded using good old fashioned logic and rational thinking. Not always, so don't be frustrated if they don't respond accordingly. But you stand a much better chance of getting your point across if you remain calm and relay on solid reasoning.

Lastly, and this is key, do not solicit their advice unless you actually want it. Because you will receive it tenfold.
