Was the British government right to ban fox-hunting?

Fox hunting

First let me make it clear, I'm not pro-hunting, but at the same time I'm not against it either. I am against the fox hunting ban though, or at least the reasons behind it. The ban only exists because a desperate Labour party made promises for virtually anything they thought would bring in votes. Knowing the rural areas are predominantly right wing, they had nothing to lose.

Town folk hear about fox hunting, decide that it's cruel and want it banning. Town folk know nothing of rural ways. Whatever goes on in the countryside doesn't affect the city dwellers in any way, but they're fast enough to jump on a hippy led band wagon having little or no knowledge of what the hell is going on.

I don't hear of farmers travelling into the city to protest about pigeon culls. Farmers don't care what goes on in the city; they just accept it and let the town folk get on with it. The same should apply the other way round. If you know nothing about a subject, either learn about it or keep your mouth shut.

This is why I can't support the ban. It was brought about for all the wrong reasons and supported by all the wrong people. The hunt protesters would travel into the countryside with anyone who would support their cause. The animal loving protesters, had unwittingly brought urban riot hardened, drug fuelled thugs with them, who where only there to cause trouble. So when clashes between the hunters and the protesters erupted, all hell broke loose. This left horses with slashed necks and many people on both sides needing hospital treatment.

How can an animal lover justify allowing a horses neck to be slashed in an attempt to prevent cruelty to animals? The ban was a complete travesty forced by a ruthless vote grabbing government, with no though for the actual policy!
