Revealing clothing for young girls is not just inappropriate; it is wrong. And what's worse is that the trend towards sexy clothing for little girls is increasing.
Children are growing up so quickly today. TV shows, movies and advertising pushes them towards a maturity far beyond their years. Little girls wanting to copy their super star heroes are choosing clothing that at best can be considered "hoochie" wear, and at worst, aggressively sexual.
Young girls have enough problems growing up without adding early sexuality to the pot. Little girls need to remain little girls until they are mentally ready for the issues that sexuality brings. But clothing emphasizing sexiness is robbing them of their childhood.
Children are happy being children until an adult tells them they need to be something different; that they need to aspire to someone greater. But today's celebrities and their clothing choices or lack thereof (consider Britney Spears no-panties look) are sending terrible messages to our young girls. And the fashion industry cashes in on those messages.
Instead of steering young girls towards modest choices, the clothing industry fans the flames. Tops resembling sexy adult negligees and T-shirts emblazoned with sexually enticing words fill the children's clothing departments. In some cases, it's nearly impossible to find clothing designed for modesty. And that's modesty, not prudery.
Low self esteem is rampant among young girls because they've never learned how to value and respect themselves, a respect that begins with appropriate clothing choices. Instead, hoochie clothing tells today's young girls that true value lies in how sexy she can look. Nothing is further from the truth.
Our young girls need clothing that tells them their value lies inside of them and has nothing to do with sex. Unlike sexy clothing, non-revealing clothing will do much to allow our little girls the time they need to be little girls.
Hoochie clothing should be left on the rack at least for a few years. Our young girls have plenty of time to be "hoochie mamas" later.
