Trade shows: What to wear

High heels? Low cut sweaters? T-shirts? Blue jeans? Your clothing choice makes the first impression at a trade show. And at a trade show, first impression is everything. If you want to be taken seriously, whether as an exhibitor or as an attendee, choose your attire wisely.

General Attire:

When choosing your wardrobe for a trade show, keep both professionalism and comfort at the forefront of your mind. Because of the short-lived nature of trade shows, you will be judged instantly by what you are wearing. Ragged jeans, sloppy running shoes, and wrinkled T-shirts do not make a good first impression.

Some trade shows are more casual, so more casual business attire like khakis and polo shirts will be acceptable. But others require full business dress complete with shirt and tie.

Blue jeans are an iffy choice at best. Some of today's casual jeans look smart when paired with a business shirt, while other blue jeans look as though they were pulled from the rag bag. If in doubt, wear corduroys or khakis. Even those in the construction industry should choose dressier clothing when attending trade shows.

Women's Attire:

Trade shows are no place for cocktail dresses or excessive cleavage. Women who dress incorrectly will be dismissed as legitimate business persons. Women should choose their attire in conjunction with the type of trade show, but still dress conservatively. A buttoned blouse or crew-neck sweater with a simple jacket is preferable to a low cut sleeveless top featuring full cleavage.

Footwear:

High heels and alligators have no place at a trade show. Trade shows are held on concrete floors. Concrete floors literally suck the energy from your body, so choose footwear that will give you cushioning. High heels give no support whatsoever and strain both the calf muscles and the lower back leading to fatigue very quickly. Choose a well-fitting shoe with a solid sole and low heel. And never wear a new shoe to a trade show; the blisters will keep you in pain for days.

Jewelery and other accents:

Be yourself. This is an excellent way to stand out from the crowd. Choose your jewelery, scarves and hats to make an impact. But don't overdo; you are not a Christmas tree.

First impressions can only be made once, so make your first impressions count by dressing wisely for your next trade show. Choose smart simple clothing that makes you feel good, confident and comfortable. Save the sexy tops for the evening gala.
