Getting bored at work? If your answer is yes, it may be time to switch careers. Choose that new direction, craft an attractive resume, search jobs on line and pound the pavement. Conversely, are you feeling great about your job? You're content, on top of your game and feeling nearly indispensable! Unfortunately, in spite of your success, you're starting to exhibit signs of complacency and even arrogance. Your value, to "the company" is overwhelming. They'll never let you go, right? Wrong, you may be starting a rapid descent towards termination. As your attitude sours, poor performance will certainly follow. Your employer will decide that it's time to cut the cord. There are several ways to lose your job and hundreds who would be glad to replace you!
An absolute taboo that will often result in termination is Internet misuse. This tool is necessary in many cases. However, some get carried away and abuse it. Spending half an hour googling summer vacation spots, on the company's time is, at best, improper. You're not going to fool your superiors. Most can trace your Internet usage. Looking for that perfect gift? Use your home computer! Try to minimize personal Internet use. If you're unaware of the boundaries, check the company policy.
Do you have a working knowledge of that company policy? Reviewing this "rule book" is recommended. Repeated violations can lead to termination. Know the policies! If food and beverages are prohibited in the work area, don't eat that submarine sandwich at your desk. Follow that dress code. The grayer areas can be trickiest and ultimately most costly. If you're looking for a second job, in roughly the same field, make sure it doesn't constitute a conflict of interest with job number 1. Most employers are very touchy about this, particularly in the technology field. Good companies will give you warnings when violations occur.
A hallmark of your performance has always been a rabid attention to details, even the smallest issues. Maybe lately, though, you've become more cavalier. Those emails that were previously immediately addressed linger a few extra days. Follow through on problems becomes spotty and inconsistent. Staying that extra half hour to keep your department on task and charging ahead is now rare. Work and analyses reflect a sloppiness attributable to this new lackadaisical attitude. Turning a great strength into future liability won't bode well for your working future, here.
Harassment issues are very serious.
