Television reviews: Doctor Who

playing the Empress of Racnoss as the villain of the piece. The Christmas Special did bring the extraordinary sight of the TARDIS flying along a major A road in pursuit of one of the robot santas who had kidnapped Catherine Tate and was driving her to the big arachnid (presumably), a sight I can't recall seeing before but the ultimate plot and the extended finale was, again, short on credibility and nearly as contrived as its forerunner the previous year.

With a new series in the can and spin-offs all over the place, Doctor Who is set to run for a few years yet, having risen from the ashes of the cutting room floor. David Tennant is a great doctor although, for me, Eccleston was the most credible doctor of them all. It will be hard to replace Billie Piper who was inspired as Rose Tiler but Freema Agyeman can but try. With the first series costing over 1million an episode and, presumably, the second being similar, Doctor Who is big business again. The winner in all of this will undoubtedly be the BBC which has sold the rights to the show all around the world (again) as well as seeing the associated merchandise become hot property for two years running. What I do know is that I've spent a few quid on Doctor Who stuff for my lad and other relatives who are hooked by the new adventures. Maybe the message in all of this is keep the quality high for future series but either ditch the Chrimbo special or come up with better plots. Then again, we've yet to see Santa Claus himself threatened by aliens; just one more person for the Doctor to save?
