You can make an impact on the environment by doing your part at home to save energy and waste. There are many ways to accomplish this task. Here are some things, that you can do to save energy at home.
{1} Turn the lights out, when you leave the room! Everyone should develop the habit of turning out the lights, when you leave the room. The type of lighting you use can make a significant difference in the amount of energy used. If you are using regular incandescent light bulbs, you'll save more energy by switching to florescent bulbs. It may cost a bit more at first, but it will save you money in the end.
{2} Using appliances that are labeled "Energy Star" will help to conserve energy in your home. Turn off all appliances that are not in use, especially electronic devices, since they use energy even when turned off. Cut down the use of appliances, which are unnecessary, such as a TV in every room. What happened to the days, when Americans gathered in the living room or family room to watch TV together? Today, it seems that everyone has a TV in their own room.
{3} Conserve water, by following a few simple steps. Taking showers instead of baths saves on water and the energy needed to heat it. You'll be cleaner and healthier too. Fix any leaky faucets, pipes and malfunctioning stools immediately. You'd be surprised how much water can be wasted with even a small drip!
{4} Energize your home by keeping it "snug as a bug"! Insulating your home is one of the most important things, that you can do to save energy and money. Eliminate any drafts, by making sure windows and doors have proper weatherstripping and caulking. If windows need to be replaced, buy those that are labeled "Energy Star".
{5} Keep heating and cooling systems in good working order by having them checked regularly by a professional licensed contractor. Replace cleaning air filters as recommended by the manufacturer. Save energy by turning the thermostat down a few degrees ...if you are too cool, put on a sweater or light jacket instead of turning up the heat. At night, sleep in a cool room.
{6} Recycle, Recycle, Recycle! Items in your home such as paper {newspapers, magazines, cardboard, etc.}, plastics {soda bottles} aluminum {soda cans} and glass can be recycled and used again. Contact your local recycling center to get information on recycling in your community. When you go shopping, buy products packaged in recycled materials.
We can make an impact on the environment if everyone makes their home more energy efficient and spreads the word about global warming.
