How to decide if you should be a substitute teacher

Do you have patience, love kids, and want a flexible schedule? Than substitute teaching may be just the job for you. One of the most important things when considering any job is to consider not only what the employer is looking for in you,but also what your needs are in regards to the job.

Many people think that substitute teaching is something anyone can do and that is simply not true. Being a quality substitute teacher is not only challenging, but it is a very important job. It isn't for everyone and people often realize that too late.

As a substitute teacher, you will be asked to be patient. You will need to understand that if you show up at work and they need you somewhere other than where they first assigned you, you might be moved. You also need to understand that the kids will test your resolve and would like nothing more than to see you get rattled. If you can maintain a calm and consistent demeanor in the classroom, it will be much easier to be a substitute teacher.

So, you have the patience and you love the kids, but still there is more to making this decision. Can you afford to be a substitute teacher? Possibly you are looking for something that is sporadic and where you have to be ready at the spur of the moment, but just be sure when you are enjoying those days without work that you have enough money to pay the bills. As much fun as it is to have a flexible schedule, it is not much fun doing it while living back in mom and dad's basement or while your family has to go without their basic needs being met. Unless you obtain a long term or permanent substituting assignment, your paychecks can be unpredictable and that must be a big consideration.

Substitute teaching can and should be a rewarding job, but rest assured it is not always easy. If you are going to do it and do it well, you should be ready for some challenges and some ways to overcome them. Ask people that have been substitute teaching for years or even ask some veteran teachers and when you feel ready to give it a try, get in touch with your local school district to see what they have to offer.
