Soaps are truly a form of escapism. A method of release. One can leave the reality of modern day life and all its complexities and harsh realities behind and enter a world of illusion. Soap Opera viewers imagine themselves as their favourite charachers or as a new character who may enter the plot. Too many viewers it is a way of creating a new life, the life they'd like to lead.

Soap fiction allow us to become involved in other peoples lives, to feel part of the 'communtiy'. Hence, many avid viewers often mistake fiction and reality as they allow the fiction to become such an important part of their lives. Unfortunately people who are serial soap addicts often have not much else to fill their lives with. Television dramas are their lives, they may be lonely with little other comfort.

On the other hand to many soap is just pure entertainment and regarded as nothing else. A wind down exercise at the end of a busy day or a welcomed distraction.
