One of my favorite romance novels is one that was made into a movie (although of course I liked the book better). It is by Nicholas Sparks. If you enjoyed the movie, do yourself a favor and read the book. The movie was great but the book covers the most minute details. Everyone know unless you want a really long and drawn out movie, you just can't fit everything from the book in it.
Anyway, it starts out with a young couple being friends and subsequently falling in love. Her family doesn't approve because the boy isn't from a well to do family. She considers him and his kind trash.
As so often happens in these circumstances, they drift apart. Years later they meet up again. Their love is rekindled and stronger than ever.
A good portion of the story is told by an elderly gentleman to his wife. She suffers from Alzheimer's and he is trying his best to make her remember the past. You see, they were once that young couple. They beat the odds and got married. After raising their family and loving each other faithfully all through their years together, he thought they had everything. Until she started to forget little things at first, then just about forgetting everything. Him, their children, grandchildren, their fight to be and stay together.
That is why he reads her the journal of the past. He wants her to remember him. He wants her back to the way she was. He reads to her day after day. Even after his health starts failing. He leaves his hospital bed to go to her room. He lays in the bed beside her. She has a few lucid moments and sees him laying there. When the nurses come to her room, probably looking for him as well as checking on her, they are found laying side by side. They are finally together again. In heart and spirit.
