Top ranked high schools, give students an edge when applying for colleges and universities. The high schools that consistently lead the school district with better test scores and excel in other fields of academia, sports, music and drama have a higher number of students who attend top ranked colleges and lower high school dropout rates. Still these statistics do not necessarily mean that attending one of these top ranked schools, gives your child a guaranteed admission to Harvard.
The leading high schools in the nation have better faculty and more resources than their lower ranked counterparts. These high schools have smaller teacher to student ratios, and more after school programs available. This leads to improved student performance in all arenas.
But at the end of the day, individual student performance is what colleges and universities look at when they decide on whether to accept or reject applicants. Students who are at one of the higher ranked high school should take advantage of the resources available to them, while students at lower ranked schools should focus on their studies and try to get the best possible grades. Also, these students at lower ranking schools should look outside the school environment for resources which will help them when applying for college by assisting the help of tutors or taking enrichment classes at their local community college.
