Music reviews: Punk rock

It is clich to say that punk rock is about the idea more than the music but there is some truth to it. The idea of making your own way in the music industry on the back of sheer self-belief cannot be underestimated. It sent forth a message that anyone can form a band - where it goes from there is not guaranteed but if the group has true talent (in a perfect world) it will be recognised. The modern music industry continues to run on this basis: self-production and (increasingly) self-promotion through new technology are an incredible force.

This is the main thing that punk rock has given the musical world but lets not forget the music. While much of it is best forgotten as bandwagon-jumping there is plenty of great punk rock out there (Stiff Little Fingers, Sex Pistols, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Ramones etc.) and it has come to permeate more than just the independent scene - it is normal now to here chart-topping pop music using three chord buzz guitar and singers who can't sing (whether this is a good thing or even in the spirit of punk is debatable).

The best punk is a combination of energy, self-belief and anti-establishment feeling, but never at the expense of a good tune!
