4-H programs offer a great deal of diversity. They give children a chance to learn about their interests, meet new people, as well as to participate in exciting new activities.
Children as young as 6 years old can begin participating in 4-H activities. Clubs offer young people a chance to explore a broad range of interests, based on skill level and understanding. Each club meets for several months during the school year. Whether your child loves Art or Archery, Baking or raising Bovine, from Drama to Leadership, Child Care to Entreprenuerhip, there is a club for everyone. Throughout the time the clubs meet together children study, in depth, the subject of their club. They learn interesting facts, participate in art and craft activities, or hands on work with their chosen interest.
The culmination of 4-H activities happens at your county fair. Children enter exhibits they have made, or show off the skills they have learned. Exhibits are judged by area and awarded either first, second or third place ribbons. Your child will make a bit of money for their efforts, with different colored ribbons paying different amounts.
As a homeschooling mom, I cannot tell you how much I appreciated 4-H clubs. The information my children learned, and the skills they developed while involved in
4-H were well worth the time and effort it took to drive them back and forth to club meetings, help them with club projects and get them to the fair during 4-H days. The experiences they have had in 4-H have taught them that hard work and effort pay off. Many years my children have each recieved checks in the amount of $50.00 or more, for projects and skill demonstrations.
