BALANCE
Mesmerized by watching the patterns of my kaleidoscope screensaver, my mind is wandering like a rowboat adrift in stormy waters. I've had two hours' sleep during the past thirty-six hours and have no business still sitting at this computer. Who is better qualified to write about balance than a person who has very little?
In seeking help for myself, I've turned to the Internet for expert advice. Following the advice I find is a different subject, so I'll stick to tips for creating balance in everyday life.
The tips here are gleaned from several contributors at the website shown below. I am presenting the concepts that clicked with me, plus I've added my own two cents worth.

Tips for creating balance in your life:
* Break your life down to include the major areas you consider important. Keep the number of items on your list manageable to realistically cover during the course of a week, divided by days. My list consists of
(1) socialize with family and friends (goal 5 hours per week);
(2) work/learning (goal 5 hours per day);
(3) health, self-care (average 1 hour per day);
(4) exercise (goal 1/2 hour x 6 days a week);
(5) spirituality (goal daily devotions and church 4 hours per week);
(6) play (goal limit to 2 hours per day);
(7) creative pursuits (goal 5 hours per day); and
(8) sleep (goal 6 hours per night starting before midnight).
There are 168 hours in a week and my goals consist of 156 hours. Good, built-in recess.
* Put yourself on a schedule. Set a timer if necessary, and move on to the next thing you want to accomplish that day. Even though this may be difficult, it's in the pursuit of balance, so it's okay, you'll come back to your passion later.
* Keep your schedule flexible enough to allow for unanticipated events and other options.
My advice: Pursue your dreams, laugh out loud every day, don't sweat the small stuff, smile at strangers (you'll be amazed at how many smile back) and be good to yourself.
