The high school math club gave me some great skills, and did not turn me into a nerd. I never intended to join any clubs, but was recruited to join the math club to help my school field a team in a regional math competition. Under intense pressure from my parents, I agreed to participate, reluctantly.
Truthfully, this was one of the better decisions that I made during my freshman year of high school. I learned the basics of doing speed math mentally, and it was a lot of fun. When I could do somewhat complicated math problems without pencil and paper, my friends were properly amazed. Most 15 years old boys can use a little self esteem, and the success of our math team in regional competitions certainly did not hurt me.
Beyond all of that, while I wasn't considered a nerd, the label would not have bothered me. In today's world, Bill Gates might be considered to be a nerd, but who wouldn't trade places with him. My advice is this, if you are good at math, join the club and learn some neat tricks like I did. You won't regret it, particularly when you realize how many people look up to you as someone special!
