Assessing the US media coverage of global warming

Al Gore conned all the Hollywood parlor politicians into giving him an Oscar for his global warming warning, "An Inconvenient Truth." That divided the argument right down the middle for all the TV and radio pundits. The guys on the right said Al was wrong, and the guys on the left said Al was right. So, what is the score?

No one really knows. We'd have to study climate for the next 10,000 years, gather all the statistics and then discover if Al was on target or not. Since most of us won't live that long, the argument will remain moot.

In my not-so-humble opinion, Al Gore was right in warning about an almost inevitable disaster, but if he had just adjusted the description a bit, his argument would be much closer to the total inconvenient truth. Actually, global warning is just part of the problem. The real truth is that the Earth is choking on global pollution.

There's probably nothing much people can do about global warming itself. The Earth has been warming and cooling in million-year cycles for at least 100 million years. If the media would direct its scrutiny on human-caused global pollution, maybe we could start taking serious steps to prevent us from destroying ourselves.

Earth's population is growing at the rate of more than ten percent a year. If the growth continues, the eventuality is that we'll breed, consume and smog ourselves into oblivion. Our addiction to burning fossil fuels will soon pollute the air so badly, we'll eventually choke out all living creatures on Earth.

The other pollution that outweighs all other potential doomsday scenarios is nuclear war. At the current rate of proliferation of those weapons, especially in rogue nations including Iran and North Korea, we won't have to worry about all the other potential disasters. A single nuclear bomb attack would most likely bring massive retaliations, and thus send the Earth into what fearful scientists call "nuclear winter", the complete devastation of the planet.

Therefore, we can hope the media will wake up to the real dangers, and stop praising or panning Al Gore and his advocates. Their warnings are helpful and valuable, but just don't expose the entire frightening picture. In the end, we'll all have to face the most inconvenient truth in the history of mankind. The threat of total destruction.
