There are many factors that contribute to the popularity of amateurs maintaining celebrity news/gossip blogs.

For one thing, it's an easy way to draw views to your blog. Our culture is obsessed with celebrities, and many of the top searches displayed on the front page of search engines such as MSN and Yahoo are directly related to celebrities. With so many people searching for the latest dish on their favorite celeb, it doesn't take much effort to get some of that traffic directed to an up to date blog post. More traffic also equals more money to a monetized blog.

Celebrity gossip columnists have an aura of glamor about them, and so many of us want to live glamorous lives. A celebrity focused blog can offer you some of that excess stardust without the potential stigma that old school fansites have.

While other informative blogs require a certain amount of research or experience to write knowledgeably on a subject, celebrity gossip is thrown at us from every angle. Search engines headline celebrity news, there is an entire TV channel devoted to celebrity news and gossip and many individual shows, and even the news, newspapers, and magazines get in on the action. Rather than having to seek out knowledge, we have to shut ourselves away to avoid hearing about celebrities.

Humans are incredibly opinionated, and blogs are the playground of those opinions. The real curiosity seems to be why there aren't more amateur celebrity blogs.
