Understanding the charter school movement in America

Frustration with public schools have led to reforms that fuel the charter school movement here in America. Charter school operate independently of certain federal and state regulations that public schools do. They are allowed to do so only under the premise that the lax regulations will result in superior performance by the students above and beyond what the testing levels of standard public schools.

President George Bush's No Child Left Behind policy has helped bring the charter school movement into the forefront of the mainstream consciousness. Since charter schools tend to be located more in urban areas where parents, critical of the poor levels of education in the public schools, look for alternative educational opportunities for their children.

According to the US Charter School's website, the greater autonomy that charter schools have is in direct correlation to the increased accountability of testing results. Still some charter schools are not so greatly innovative and still operate under similar parameters of public schools but they have certain programs that are not available in the public school system.
