Pythagoras's theorem is in fact one major development in geometry! The theorem states that the square of the hypotenuse in a right angled triangle (the hypotenuse refers to the longest side of a right angled triangle) is the sum of the squares of the other two sides (typically the two sides creating the right angle). Or in another form, the square-root of the sum of squares of the two shorter sides of a right angled triangle is equal to the hypotenuse. The theorem can easily be understood by taking a piece of paper and a pencil, sketching a right angled triangle and assigning letters to the three sides. Then applying the theorem stated above. Manipulating the equation makes it easier to understand in some cases. The proof for the theorem is a much detailed explanation involving similar triangles, but the theorem itself is not too difficult to understand.
