Free Trade is a concept wherein a customer can buy products from anywhere in the world and no extra duty is levied on him for importing. Alternatively a manufacturer can export his products without any duty being levied. As a concept a customer can get the product at the same cost [plus transportation] anywhere in the world. This is the ideal situation and it couldn't be better for a customer, for he can get the best product at the best price. Also this augurs well with the Core competency theory as in a Free Trade scenario only those companies can survive who manufacture the best product at the best price [others may also survive in case demand is more than supply].
But it doesn't work like this because governments want to protect their industries because of certain reasons. Hence they generally impose some import duty on the products to make them dearer. But at times there can be Free Trade agreements between countries to provide certain products.
