It is something many of us have noticed; skirts getting shorter, the cut of tops getting lower, all for children under the age of 13. It's despicable. More and more children are wearing clothes that are nowhere near appropriate for them. Clothing such as the mini skirt and the chest-bearing top (particularly when the wearer hasn't even grown a chest) can make children even bigger targets than they are. It can give predators the wrong impression and children may become victims.
This is the sexualisation of childhood. There is more sexually provocative clothing available for young children. There are thongs and shirts featuring logos such as the Playboy logo or phrases such as Porn Star'. The clothing market takes unfair advantage of children's desire for affection and the need to conform, leading to eating disorders, low self-esteem and depression.
Children need to be children. They been time the play and not worry about things they don't need to know about such as sex, impressing members of the opposite sex or attracting members of the opposite sex. The sexually provocative clothing is at the centre of these problems. Children are growing up too fast, they need time to enjoy the trivial issues of childhood before they embark on the horrid issues of adulthood.
There are also many role models' that children look up to and hope to looks like. It is partially because of this that these children request the clothes they wear. It is also imitation of the many dolls available now that also wear fewer and few clothes that give children an incorrect expectation of how they should dress and look.
On a final note, parents, allow children to dress like children. Don't listen if they beg for that belly top, buy a jumper instead.
