Basic online communication tips

by teskaa

The digital online world is a vast place of knowledge, connections, and media. When attempting to communicate across this digital world, you should keep a few things in mind.

Because of the nature of the beast, online communication can be tricky. It is not as if you are standing next to the person speaking to them. Keep in mind that they cannot hear inflections in your voice, or see you smile when you type something. Due to that inability to distinguish exactly what the written words mean compared to what the spoken words would sound like, people find themselves inadvertently causing problems that otherwise wouldn't be there.

Try to keep sarcasm to a minimum, or not at all if you can help it. Unless the person you are communicating with knows you well, and knows when you are being sarcastic, this can be detrimental.

Allow time for the other person to answer you before moving on to another topic, or continuing on with an explanation. Remember, not everyone types a hundred words per minute. They may also be researching their answer. So, be patient. Let them answer, then continue on with the conversation.

If this is a buisness communication, try to keep the 'leet (1337) speak or typical Instant Message shortcuts out of the conversation. Also, avoid smiley faces or other such emotes. Keep the conversation professional.

Always keep in mind that the other person cannot see you or hear you ... and vise versa. Ask questions if you do not understand what they are saying, and let them know to do the same.

Online communication is difficult, but it doesn't have to be if you keep a level head, don't assume, and type clearly.
